The Rôle of Vital Layer (or Schmutzdecke) in Slow Sand Bacteriological Purification
نویسنده
چکیده
The upper layer formed on the surface of theslow sand filter does not appear to play the most important part in bacteriological purification. The sand filters at Pulta, with a capacity of about 99 million gallons daily, offer an excellent opportunity to study such actions, as it sometimes becomes necessary to rake a running filter when it tends to choke, which rapidly diminishes the rate of filtration.

Visualisation of the microbial colonisation of a slow sand filter using an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope
The removal of contaminants in slow sand filters occurs mainly in the colmation layer or schmutzdecke a biologically active layer consisting of algae, bacteria, diatoms and zooplankton. A ripening period of 6 8 weeks is required for this layer to form, during which time filter performance is sub-optimal. In the current study, an environmental scanning electron microscope was used to visualise t...

The decimal elimination capacity (DEC) of slow sand filters (SSF) for viruses, bacteria and oocysts of Cryptosporidium has been assessed from full-scale data and pilot plant and laboratory experiments. DEC for viruses calculated from experimental data with MS2-bacteriophages in the pilot plant filters was 1.5–2 log10. E. coli and thermotolerant coliforms (Coli44) were removed at full-scale and ...
متن کاملThe biosand filter is a household-scale drinking water treatment system intended for use in rural and impoverished areas
The intermittent slow sand filter (biosand filter) is a household-scale drinking water treatment system known for its simplicity and ease of use. This research examines several factors affecting the flowrate of the biosand filter as well as schmutzdecke disturbance, volume of water treated, and previous microbial loading to determine their effect on removal of microbes. It is recommended that a...

This study is a contribution to the study of the spatial evolution of the properties of the municipal lake of Yaounde-Cameroon. The objective was the characterization of the physico-chemical, bacteriological and organoleptic parameters of water of this lake in order to provide the scientifically exploitable data. To understand the sources and the evolution of the pollution of this lake, we carr...
متن کاملRisk Assessment of the Schmutzdecke of Biosand Filters: Identification of an Opportunistic Pathogen in Schmutzdecke Developed by an Unsafe Water Source
The biosand filter (BSF) is widely applied in developing counties as an appropriate technology-based product for supplying "safe" water. Biosand filters exhibit relatively high purifying efficiency because of the schmutzdecke (biofilm) embedded in them. However, schmutzdecke should be cleaned or discarded on a regular basis to maintain the purifying efficiency of the BSF. Due to its role in BSF...
